Website Evaluation - The website is off to a great start with over almost 765 visitors in one year. Several of these were inquiries as to relatives who may have been buried at the cemetery. One inquiry came from British Colombia, BC. So indeed we have expanded our horizons. We have had several comments on how professional and informative the site is!

Suggestions: from the Board
1. Have a ¡§Donate¡¨ link with Paypal on the home page - Webmaster said that this would not be effective for our needs.
2. Put the date /time of the Work Party on the home page or a visible link to the newsletter - done
3. Explore the possibility of having an email registry created through the website for future correspondence - Webmaster said that email addresses are able to be seen with a portal within the site.

Fence and other Repairs. A portion of the north fence line was repaired by Viking Fence Company.

Thanks to Ben Pearson for repairing 2 faucets that had leaks

Laurie will continue to send the newsletter both via email and snail mail

All Cemetery Documents are archived and secure with the Harbor History Museum. They can be accessed by anyone wishing to do so by making an appointment with someone at the front desk.

Laurie identified 31 burials without a permanent headstone. All but 2 do not have a known living relative. Those families will be contacted with a personal note. Premier Memorial in Tacoma had the best deal for 12' x 12' x 4' granite markers. We would be getting wholesale cost: $137.00 less 15% for an order of 10. They would be using leftover material and we would not have a choice in color selection. Each could be engraved with Name, DOB and DOD. Some graphics could be included. Stones will be delivered to the cemetery. We would need to do the installation.

Laurie will order 10.

A signup sheet was passed around for those who would like to help identify the plots and set the stones one or two days during the summer

Several trees were removed to the North side of the cemetery which were becoming crowded. Thank you to Glen Rodgers who over saw the falling and to Doug Holsinger, John Gagnon and Ben Pearson who did the limbing and cutting the trees into rounds. The wood was offered to the Cromwell email list and all was taken within 3 days. Williams Tree Service chipped and removed all the debris. The site looks splendid!

New Business

Laurie will coordinate 'Round 2' of installing markers for unmarked graves this summer. A sign-up sheet was pass for volunteers. Date yet to be determined.

Definition of 'green burial' & Cromwell Policies
A green (natural) burial emphasizes simplicity and environmental sustainability. The body is neither cremated nor prepared with chemicals such as embalming fluids. It is simply placed in a biodegradable coffin or shroud and interred without a concrete burial vault.
Cromwell Cemetery has never required a concrete vault. The board clarified that a coffin must be used, but it could be a simple pine box. All cremains must be buried in an urn. This clarification has been added to the Cemetery Policies
It was noted that if a casket burial is done by Haven of Rest, it is their policy to install a plastic liner.

Round 2 of installation of 10 markers for unmarked graves was completed in June.: Volunteers were: Laurie Dahl Isacson, Ben Pearson, Doug & Eric Holsinger, Margaret Ellingson, Cheryl Rogers and Dave Rogers. Stones were 12' x 12' x 4'. The cost was covered by donations. New markers were for: Lola Mae Berg, Edward Martin Iverson, Baby Boy Larson, Melcer Bernard Larson, Bertha Kavli Larson, Delbert Larson, Marion Donna Mae Larson, Melvin Bernard Larson, Baby Boy Marzan and Carl Vernon Mattson.

New Business

Thank you to the 30+ people who showed up for the social distanced work party. A lot of work was completed in a couple of hours. It was great to see so many new folks who joined.

Un-Marked Graves: Final Group - The Board approved ordering markers for the last 8 remaining unmarked graves. These will be funded by donations. Laurie will plan with Premier Memorial once she is able to have a meeting with them, probably June. The final ones will include: Fritz Berntsen, Elizabeth Berntsen, Baby Girl Thurston, Lillian Emilia Thurston, Bert Henry Florte, Baby Boy Hansen, Carolyn Stalwick and Anna Carlson. Installation will be done later in the summer.
(This will be transferred to the summer of 2021)

Broken Faucets Thank you to John who fixed several broken faucets and pipes. It seems that we have had a run of piping problems.

Maps Ben created new map (2020 N/S Fence) that goes fence to fence (north to south) along the road. This has 10 rows to the west for future needs. A new numbering system was created that was consistent.
The plots in the 1989 Fritz Berntsen Survey (SE of Old Area) should all have a 0 preceding the plot number Ex 318 should be 0318. This will distinguish plots from new 2020 N/S Fence map
Laurie updated the records to reflect the new plot numbers.

Dirt Pile Nate is in conversation with Haven of Rest as to the dirt pile left by the grave digging contractor. Apparently, HR now subs this work out rather than using their own staff., HR will contact the sub and let them know that leaving dirt is not acceptable.

Annual Meeting/Potluck In keeping with Governor Inslee’s Covid-19 Social Distancing mandate the Board decided to cancel the annual meeting\/ potluck for this year. Current officers will have their term extended for one year. Voting for officers will resume next year.

Annual Work Party Governor Inslee extended the 'Stay Home' mandate until May 4. The Board decided to have the work party with staggered times and a mandate for social distancing. Folks were encouraged to come at other times. Gates would be open, and water would be on. No coffee was served at the gate.

Banking Donna went to Colombia Bank to inquire if there was any way we could make more money with that which we have in the checking account. She was told 'the money is as good in a checking account as a CD. Both places are insured. The interest rate for a CD is .01%'. No, that was not a typo, .01% is the going rate.

Investing the Board approved Ben to establish an account with Fidelity Investments. Ben has had an account with this company and has had positive success over the years. The account would be set up as Hales Passage Scandinavian Lutheran Cemetery Investment Fund. Ben and Laurie would both have their names on the account.
the initial investment would be $15,000 from the checking account.

Old Business

Unmarked Graves
The last 6 markers will be ordered, and installed. Ed Berntsen will take care of his parent’s markers.

Additions

Burn Pile
The burn pile was deemed too large to burn. Laurie will contact Williams Tree and Stump Service to chip what they can from the burn pile. At the same time 2 dead/dying trees will be removed and others limbed and trimmed. Laurie will get a bid and run it past the Board for approval.

The Bingham Dogwood Tree had some life, so the dead material was trimmed off and it was given more light by removing neighboring ranches

All faucets have been repaired and posts and hose holders.

Thank you to the 40 plus volunteers who came for the clean up day. There were lots of children and families. Thanks to the many who brought John Deere wagons to help move the debris to the burn pile. Nate, his tractor, and wagon were sorely missed.

Thanks to Krista Pearson, who offered to help with Cemetery needs, Paul McCormick who would transfer maps to a CAD program and to Kim Crowder wo offered to help with genealogy of Cromwell 'residents'

Laurie Dahl Isacson

Old Business from 2021
Unmarked Graves The last of the 30 unmarked graves stones were set today. This was financed with donations contributed over the past 5 years.

Memorial The Memorial tree for Nate Sears and Larry & Marit Ross will. Be replaced. It either died, was eaten by deer, and then accidently mowed over. This time fencing will be placed around it.

Dedication of Flagpole At 10:30 the dedication of the new flagpole was held. Edward Peterson coordinated the installation of the new flagpole behind the sign. This was his Eagle Scout project. Did you know that thew 12 folds of the flag are symbolic of life values? Edward worked with fellow members and Scout Leaders of Troop 217. He is thanked for his diligent work. It is a beautiful addition to the Cemetery. American Legion provided a 5' flag.

New Business
Clarifying marker hubs in in the North section and the East Section

A work party will be organized during the summer to identify the wood stakes in the East section with metal piping so they will be easier to find in the future. John suggested that the cemetery purchase a metal detector when the stakes are covered. This area is the most desired for new plots. John will investigate a suitable material to cover the stakes. Laurie will send out an email to see who might be available when a dated is settles upon.

The work in the North area will be tabled for another year.

Plot Price Increase
The Board decided to increase the cost of a plot to $600. This would take effect immediately.

Website Updates
Laurie updated several materials on the website, www.cromwellcemetery.org

Our legal name is Hales Passage Scandinavian Lutheran Cemetery. Checks made to the cemetery should use that name. Awareness of the discrepancy came from a new bank employee noting the 2 names for the same account. The name Cromwell Cemetery was adopted over time because it was shorter and identified the geographical area which is common with the local cemeteries.

An introductory paragraph on the website now states: As a small cemetery in an ever-growing larger community, we strive to stay true to the original intent of our forefathers. We do this by limiting burials to those who have ties to the Cromwell area or have family members buried in the Cemetery. We receive many inquiries per the website from out-of-town individuals who have no community ties.

Signage Update
The Board approved the addition of a sign, Hales Passage Scandinavian Lutheran Cemetery be placed below the Cromwell Cemetery sign.

Election of Officers – President, Vice –President, Secretary & Treasurer
The Officers and Board of directors agreed to serve another term.
President Ben Pearson
Vice President Joyce Sears
